A break in the weather meant we could install the new bench at the bottom of Upper Cumberland Walk. Those who regularly passed the old one will know it was literally on its last legs.
Andy Hempleman and Mark Robson installed the anchors into the pavement with a little encouragement from our Chairman, Neil who gave the area a good sweep. It’s the first of a number of improvements thanks to the increased subscription which is allowing us to make small, but materially significant improvements to the area. On the front base is an inscription, ‘Brought to you by WPARA’ so residents can see where their money is going.
The quote from John Lennon, “Life is what happens to you you’re busy making other plans” is from the lyrics of the song Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy). It’s from the album Double Fantasy which was released shortly before he was so tragically murdered in 1980. The song is about his his son Sean who was five at the time. When Paul McCartney appeared on Desert Island Discs he picked it as his favourite song and we hope the words are something passers-by and weary walkers can reflect on.
